The Americano is the perfect example of taking a traditional coffee drink and adding customizations to make it your own. The drink got its name from American soldiers in Italy during World War II watering down espresso in an attempt to make the intense coffee taste more like what was available at home in the U.S. at that time. The result of adding hot water to a dose of espresso is a smoother lighter drink much closer to what you get from drip style brewing.
Because of the simplicity of this drink there are many variations in the coffee community; pour over ice and add cold water for an iced americano, add steamed milk for a white americano, use drip coffee instead of water to dilute the espresso and you have yourself a Red Eye. Simply put The Americano is a forgiving base for making the perfect coffee drink with unlimited customizations available.
